A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to do something I have wanted to do for many years, caving! My good mate & cousin Peter Francis who is an experienced caver & a member of the South & Mid Wales Cave Rescue invited me to join him on an excursion under the stunning Upper Swansea Valley. I wasn’t really sure what to expect when we entered the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (Welsh for Cave of the Black Spring) cave system but the excitement levels were very high. The only thing I could see was whatever my head torch illuminated. One of the reasons I ventured underground was to take some photos, the challenge was on! I took very minimal kit with me as everything had to be carried in a waterproof canister. My kit consisted of my Nikon D800, a Nikkor 14-24mm lens & a SB900 speedlight and no tripod to rest my camera on, my photos had to be handheld. We waded up to our knees in water, squeezed through gaps just big enough to get through but I enjoyed every single moment of it! They say you have to suffer for your art & on this occasion that saying is so right!
